What is Herbal Medicine?
Herbal medicine is the use of plant derived medicine to treat and prevent disease. Herbal medicines provide a natural, gentle, effective and safe treatment. Herbal medicine can be used on its own or alongside conventional treatment. Some of the conditions commonly seen in the clinic include:
- Insomnia and fatigue
- Anxiety, stress and depression
- Skin problems such as eczema and acne
- Digestive problems such as irritable bowel syndrome and constipation
- Allergic conditions such as hay fever, asthma and catarrh
- Gynaecological problems such as premenstrual syndrome and menopausal problems
- Joint and muscle problems such as arthritis and gout
Benefits of visiting a Medical Herbalist
Medical Herbalists use traditional knowledge of herbs combined with recent scientific evidence. Each person is considered as a whole with the aim of finding the underlying causes of the illness and maximising the body’s own healing capacities. Treatment is patient specific and a unique combination and dosage of herbs is prepared to meet the individual requirements of each patient. Advice is also given on diet and lifestyle. Patients of all ages, from infants to the very elderly, can benefit from herbal medicine.
The Herbal Consultation
The initial consultation lasts about an hour and consists of questions about the presenting condition and a detailed case history. Investigations such as blood pressure and physical examinations may be carried out to aid diagnosis. The second consultation lasts about 30 minutes and takes place 2 weeks later to assess progress and review the herbal prescription and treatment. Further consultations may take place every 4 to 8 weeks and the duration of treatment will depend on the condition.
Following the consultation a prescription will be prepared in the herbalists own dispensary. The prescription may be a tincture (a blend of herbal extracts in an alcohol/water base), tea, capsule or cream.
